Types of Files

  1. Mesh file (.STL, .OBJ, .DAE) – find online or make with CAD software.
  2. Project file – saved by your slicer so you can continually fine-tune your settings.
  3. G code file (.gCode) – make with the slicer and send to the 3D printer.

Types of Filament

  • PLA – defects are rare, but heat and sun may cause warping
  • PETG – somewhat sturdy, but somewhat prone to print defects
  • ABS – sturdy and heat resistant, but more prone to print defects
  • Carbon Fiber – incredibly strong, but expensive and hard on the machine
  • TPU – unique for its flexibility, but very prone to defects

Sizes of Filament

Filaments most often come in one of two sizes, 1.75 mm, or 2.85 (3) mm. Shop for the one that matches your printer.
